Chapter 4

Rome, Italy
Year 1493

"Do you like it, Carlotta? This is going to be our new home."
The family of four had just arrived in Rome, a city much larger than what they were used to from home. In Siena they even lived a bit outside of town, but now they got a house in the center of the city. Carlotta smiled widely, and nodded, being just as excited as an 8-year old could be when arriving at a new place with new sights and experiences.

It was the middle of the day when Carlotta and her older brother, Ricardo, sat on a bench in the heart of the markets in Rome. They were watching as their mother did shopping and other 'funny looking' people did what they did. Their father soon returned from a meeting, and sat down beside his children. Carlotta had a bit too many questions for her 15-year old brother to bother listening to, as he already knew most of the answers, so he got up to go on a little adventure for himself. Not too far away from his family of course, as he didn't know the city.

He ended up with climbing the stand of a statue to take a rest from his exploring. But as he did, a city guard rounded a nearby corner, just in time to see Ricardo. "You there! Get down from the statue!" Ricardo turned around, to see the guard closing up on him, but refused to get down from his 'perfect relaxing spot'. "You can't decide what I'm doing." He said to the guard, reaching his tounge to him. Words were then unnecessary for the guard, he grabbed Ricardo's arm and pulled him down by force. Ricardo only reacted by kicking the other's leg, as hard as he could. "You little brat! That's enough!" The boy realized he might had gone too far, and started running, fast, as he had learned from his father. The guard's feet were however longer than his, and it didn't take a long time before the heavy thumps from the guard's steps reached him. A loud scream broke the sound of their footsteps.

The next thing the boy knew was that he was down on the ground, his mother's face looked at him with shining eyes, like she was about to cry. "Ricardo…" she said. The boy then realized she was holding her arms around him, but weakly. The guard stood behind them, looking sort of frightened. Quick footsteps stopped beside them. "Airiana!" That's when he realized it, the blood on the ground, on his clothes... The spear piercing through his mother's stomach. The following screams seemed to last forever.

"Assassin? So it was your wife… If I had known, I wouldn't even hesitate taking her down."

Rome, Italy
Year 1510/1511

"Mentor! .. Where is he?!" The assassin known as Carlotta Rielli had just returned to Rome, from one of her travels around Europe in search of information. The assassin's headquarters in Rome were empty, except for a female recruit who Carlotta hadn't met before. "Mentor Ezio left for Masyaf several days ago…" she said. Carlotta looked at her, speechless. This news had not reached her in Europe. "Is there any way to get in contact with him? Someone who can deliver him a message?" Carlotta looked at the recruit, nearly desperate, but only got a slight shrug in return. "I'm sorry, I don't know anything." Carlotta sighed, and walked over to the library. It had to be something there, something about the pieces. Either it was the fact that she was tired, or had no luck finding what she was looking for, which caused her to leave again, and return home.

The next day she paid the mentor's sister, Claudia Auditore, a short visit. Getting to know that Ezio was in search of the Masyaf keys, and most probably wouldn't return to Italy for a while, Carlotta gave up trying to get in contact herself. Rather she told Claudia her situation, of which surprised Claudia greatly. She promised to include it in a letter to her brother, but doubted he would return even though it was of such importance.
Carlotta, now 26 years old, had gotten more experienced with the ways of the assassins over the years, but still felt she could need guidance when it came to this. She sat down on a bench in one of the many markets of Rome, and looked to the sky. This was the same spot her mother had gotten killed, years ago. She felt a bit furious as a couple of city guards walked by, but there was nothing to do about it. That just wasn't the way to solve it, and she had bigger things to worry about than revenge. "Father… Why haven't you returned yet?"

Soon her old friend and fellow assassin, Pietro, joined her on the bench. "Long time, no see." he greeted. "Good to see you're okay, Pietro." she replied, but didn't even look at him at first. "Yeah. It has been silent here, especially after Mentor left." Pietro kept talking, but Carlotta couldn't really follow his words. "Also, there was no one to mess around and try to get herself killed every other day." He never changed, did he?
"Shut up Pietro, I'm not like that anymore!" First now Carlotta looked up at him. He had gotten taller than she could remember, they were almost the same height when they were younger, but she could bet if they stood up aside eachother now, she'd just be at the level of his shoulders. He smiled back at her. "Just kidding, Carlotta. You seem bothered by something which isn't me, for once." The female turned back to looking at the street like she was thinking, and after a while, nodded. "Have you heard of the Pieces of Eden?"
A bit of a short chapter this time, but I guess that's how it is sometimes. I figures that was a useful way to keep it interesting, but then I get that feeling that most of this is just something to fill in.. ^^;

Oh well, I still enjoyed writing it, hopefully there will be some more action in the next one. :) I'm on a roll with this story~ :XD:
